We Are Only as Sick as Our Secrets

In recovery circles, we often hear that we are only as sick as our secrets. Yet many of us have been taught to associate confession with shame, judgment, or humiliation. The Fifth Step offers a different vision. By honestly sharing our struggles with God, ourselves, and another person, we discover that healing begins not when we achieve perfection, but when we stop hiding. What if confession is not about beating ourselves up, but about telling the truth and allowing ourselves to be known?

This week, we'll explore how this wisdom is deeply rooted in the Christian tradition. Long before therapists, sponsors, and support groups, followers of Jesus practiced confession as a pathway toward healing, reconciliation, and deeper community. Together, we'll rediscover an often-forgotten spiritual practice and consider how coming out of hiding can open the door to freedom, connection, and new life.
